When the working day is done, girls just wanna have fun!

In our new home/workshop, we continue the tradition of having kirtan on Friday afternoonsTGIF Kirtan!  Around 4 o’clock every Friday, the ladies clean up early, clear the floor and grab an instrument.  I have a mridanga and a harmonium, and if we are lucky, a family member may join us who knows how to play them!

Usually though, Seema’s on the dholak drum, and everybody else takes turns on the finger cymbals (kartals), maracas, and other hand noise makers or just claps with the beat (or not!)

The ladies sing so many traditional songs that they learned as little girls at the feet of other village women.  Oral traditions passed down from generation to generation.  And they always stop to translate what they are singing to me and other non-Hindi speaking guests.

Most of the songs are about Krishna,  love, and Radha, but sometimes they sing some offbeat songs such as this Friday when they sang about Shiva drinking an intoxicating drink called bhang lassie.

After singing and dancing, the ladies and guests are all served drinks, cookies, and other snacks.  They have Saturdays and Sundays off.  Though if the ladies had their way, they would work 24/7.  They love their time spent working and socializing at our new workshop/home.

Did you her the good news?  We now have hired two more full time women to sew our recycled sari shopping bags!

This is all thanks to you!  Your amazing support for our recycled sari shopping bags has made a difference in these women’s lives!

Thanks & Blessings!
