What I love about Tatiya Sthan

Every evening after the sun goes down, Tatyia Sthan is bathed in the soft glow of ghee lamps intertwined with the rythmic chanting of sankirtan.

It is a small gathering that sits on the sandy floor of the courtyard under gnarled trees and twinkling stars.

During the day, stop in for prasad around 1 pm and you can enjoy a simple meal off a leaf plate while a guard walks back and forth with a large bamboo stick in hand chasing the monkeys away.

It seems to be a game of  wits between them.

Tatiya Sthan

Tatiya sthan translate to Bamboo place

Tatiya sthan in Vrindavan is the only place in Vrindavan that connects devotees with nature. The place is home to many trees that entwine divinity of some sort, that can be felt in the ambiance of the place. Since there is no electricity the place goes dark after sunset.

Bamboo Place

Tatiya Sthan is linked to the Swami Haridas Sampradaya lineage.  There are eight acharyas (disciples) of the Haridas Sampradaya. The seventh acharya, Swami Lalit Kishori Dev ji lived on this earth between 1758 and 1823.

This temple is where Lalit Kishori the seventh follower Haridas ji. Haridas ji used to meditate. Lalit Kishori felt the place was more secluded from the other parts of Vrindavan and was closest to the banks of River Yamuna.  At the time he was meditating here, it was basically a wild jungle. The followers of Swami Lalit Kishori built a fence of bamboo around the holy man to protect him from being disturbed while in deep meditation.

Back to Nature

Tatiya Sthan in Vrindavan is one place that connects you to nature. Amidst the urbanization of Vrindavan, this divine place is one left secluded, thanks to the ritual followed by the priests of this divine place.

No photography

I have very few photographs because they are very strict about no photography. I thought it might be ok just to take a photo of the beautiful ghee lamps. But no, this was not allowed and we were asked to leave.

Women must cover their head and no shorts allowed for men. Again, we found out the hard way.
